St Brigid's School

History

St Brigid's School was founded in 1939 by a small group of people in the depression years that had little in the way of material possessions but worked long and hard for many years to bring to fruition the dream of a Catholic school in their community.

Parent Teacher Association

St Brigid’s PTA is active in fund raising and pastoral care. They work closely with the School’s Board of Trustees to improve the school resources and to ensure the children and staff have a range of high quality teaching and learning tools. This is done through a variety of fundraising activities such as raffles, quiz nights, fairs, auctions, Entertainment books – to name a few. Funds raised go towards a variety of resources including library books, learning materials - such as reading and mathematics resources, contributing to Swimsation costs, playground equipment, and up to date technology. The PTA also contributes financially to the annual Year 6 camp in Queenstown.

As part of our Pastoral care at each PTA meeting we start by identifying if there are any school families that may need support.  Organising meals or baking to help in the short term is an example of what we do.

The PTA also organises family and social events such as take away evenings, Children’s Disco, book nights and special afternoon teas.

The PTA plays an extremely important role in the life of the school and the events it organises are of great value to the school and community. New members are always welcome.

    Education Review Office

The Education Review Office reviews schools and early childhood education services every three years, and publishes national reports on current education practice.  Below are extracts from the excellent report St Brigid's received following the the last two reviews.  You can read the full reports on www.ero.govt.nz or ask for a copy from your local ERO office.

Our recent ERO reports confirmed what we already know...

"Students benefit from very good quality teaching. All teachers carefully use assessment information to inform their teaching and choose from a range of effective teaching approaches."

"Students achieve at very good levels in literacy and numeracy. Parents are kept well informed about their child’s progress and achievement through written reports, sample books and interviews."

"Teachers work well together to provide effective and interesting learning and teaching programmes."

"Students learn and play in a caring environment. ERO observed respectful relationships between students and teachers and among students. Students told ERO they enjoy the friendliness of other students. The board, senior staff and teachers have high expectations for learning and behaviour."

"The special character of the school is evident in the caring relationships between adults and students and its active promotion of positive attitudes and values."

"ERo observed high levels of student engagement.  Students interviewed by ERO, said that they valued the small class sizes and the opportunity for one-to-one work with teachers."

"The learning environment celebrates student work.  It also includes a wide range of visual prompts, useful resources, activities and books that support students in their learning.  Class environments are well organised and resources are accessible to students."

    Education Outside the Classroom

Sports
The school aims to introduce children to a wide variety of sports, and provides opportunities for children to play a range of team sports including netball, t-ball, miniball, touch rugby and petanque.

We have an innovative physical education programme, and children enjoy using a variety of fun equipment during fitness time, and at lunch and morning tea times.

St Brigid's has a proud history in a variety of sports competitions.

Swimming
All children participate in "Swimsation" which is run at Moana Pool by highly trained coaches.  The programme is designed to teach children how to swim and to e safe in and around water.  The swimming programme usually takes place in Term 3.  You can find out more about Swimsation at www.swimsation.com.

School Camp
Every year the Year 6 children attend a school camp at Lakeland Park, Kelvin Heights, Queenstown.  They take part in a variety of exciting and challenging activities while visiting many of the local, historical and modern attractions that Central Otago has to offer.

Special Needs Gifted and Talented / Extension Programmes

At St Brigid's we are committed to helping each child reach their academic and social potential.  Children needing additional support are identified early, and individually tailored programmes are developed to help them reach their full potential.
Children who are gifted and talented are also identified and challenging programmes and activities are put in place.
